BBC Panorama analysis

The programme i will be analysing is BBC Panorama, This is a documentary that uses several research and production techniques to provide the audience with information. The episode i looked at focused on a school and the problems it faced with students. BBC Panorama used observational footage in the opening which gave the viewer an insight into what the students and teachers have to deal with and give the audience first impressions of the school. The shots included conversations between the student and teacher about the students behaviour, This shows that the programme will be about and the type of situation it will cover.

The show then uses a voice over which is female as it is more appropriate than a male voice, This is due to the voice sounding more caring. The voice over is to give the audience facts and figures about the school. The information is Quantitative research as deals with numbers and statistics about the school. The reason the producers use this is because when the voice over is talking about the facts it has pan shots of the school which gives the audience the establishment of what the facts are about. The voice over also gives context and summary of the surrounding area. Halfway through the programme there is a long shot of the flats and houses around the school, this is relevant as the flats look fairly deprived and could relate to the students behaviour within the school.

The production research i compiled about this programme is they used a drone to get birds eye view shot of the school and surrounding this is due to it being less expensive than using a helicopter. The programme also uses semi-structural interviews with students and teachers to explain their situation about the problem with students and the how the teachers are trying to deal with the problems, the interviews consist of a shot of the interviewee such as within the programme the interviewer talks to a student with problems and how they are affected by bullying or things such as dyslexia.
